Changed gene expression after heart surgery extends cardiomyocyte regeneration

While lower vertebrates can repair their adult hearts after a heart attack, mammals — including humans — cannot. The ability to regenerate dead muscle tissue in mammalian hearts disappears just a few days after birth because the heart muscle cells, called cardiomyocytes, exit the cell cycle. In 2020, researchers reported that surgery to remove the left ventricle apex of the heart of pigs, one day after birth, somehow extended the replication ability of heart muscle cells. To better understand the underlying gene expression changes in this extended regeneration window, researchers now report nuclear RNA-sequencing of heart muscle cells, using this porcine model. From such knowledge, and much further research yet to come, clinicians may potentially learn how to regenerate adult heart cardiomyocytes after a heart attack.

Biden administration signals it will seek to protect access to abortion pill

U.S. President Joe Biden’s administration indicated it will seek to prevent states from banning a pill used for medication abortion in light of the Supreme Court ruling overturning the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling, signalling a major new legal fight. The administration could argue in court that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) approval of mifepristone, one of the pills used for medication abortions, pre-empts state restrictions, meaning federal authority outweighs any state action. That same argument has already been raised by Las Vegas-based GenBioPro Inc., which sells a generic version of the pill, in a lawsuit challenging Mississippi’s restrictions on medication abortion. More than a dozen states plan to almost totally ban abortion with the Roe v. Wade precedent upended. In a stunning ruling, the conservative majority Supreme Court overturned Roe on Friday, saying there is no right to abortion in the U.S. Constitution. The court, in a 6-3 ruling, upheld a Republican-backed Mississippi law that bans abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy. The vote was 5-4 to overturn Roe v. Wade, with conservative Chief Justice John Roberts writing separately to say he would have upheld the Mississippi law without taking the additional step of erasing the Roe precedent altogether. States will likely face other difficulties enforcing restrictions on medication abortion because women are still likely to be able to obtain the pills online or in other states. The FDA allows medication abortion in the first 10 weeks of pregnancy. Biden said in remarks after the Supreme Court ruling that the government would seek to protect access to

Roe v. Wade reversal leads to ‘heartbreaking’ scenes at U.S. abortion clinics

Shortly after 9 a.m. local time on Friday at Little Rock Family Planning Services, staff at the abortion clinic in Little Rock, Ark., began the task of telling patients — some of whom had travelled hundreds of kilometres — that their scheduled appointments were cancelled. “It was heartbreaking,” said clinic director Lori Williams, her voice full of emotion. “I’ve done this work for 22 years, and  none of us have really ever thought that it would come to this point.” Arkansas is one of 13 U.S. states with trigger laws — bans on abortion that would come into effect if Roe v. Wade was ever overturned. For some of those states, Friday’s U.S. Supreme Court decision to set aside the landmark ruling from 1973 had the immediate effect of ceasing all abortion services — leaving many patients scheduled for procedures in a state of shock and forced to scramble for alternatives. Abortions were immediately halted in nine states, according to The Associated Press. Providers in two other states, Oklahoma and South Dakota, had already stopped performing the procedure in the past month. About 73 million people live in the 11 states where the procedure is no longer available — more than a fifth of the U.S. population. On the morning of the Supreme Court ruling, there were six patients in the waiting area, 17 procedures scheduled and more than 30 people scheduled for their first visit at Little Rock Family Planning Services, one of two clinics that provide abortion services in the state, Williams said. She said when the decision came down, staff met with each patient individually in a private area “to give
